ESV Verse of the Day

Verse of the Day
May 21
John 3:5
5 “Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” ”
Read John 3

*Indeed, “kai” (Gk.) here means “water, even the Spirit.” With verse 8, this Textual portion does NOT directly refer to water baptism. Note verse 3 also…”born from above”, by God.  It is talking about the New Birth and Regeneration!

  1. thank you for your entry. regarding the greek translation, what reference are you using to get that kai in this instance is” even the “as opposed to being and as the text says?

    • I am using the Greek New Testament of the UBS 4th edition, Nestle-Aland 26th edition. Btw, see the Additional Notes, On The Particle KAI in The Expanded Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, 1984. And especially (h) The “epexegetic” or “explanatory” use…!

      • thanks, will do

      • Thank you for your response. I guess I need to further review greek grammar 🙂

      • I read my Greek NT every A.M., it’s of course the original language of our NT. I also do Greek Word studies, with the aide of people like W.E. Vine and E.W. Bullinger. “in the abundance of counselors there is safety” (Prov. 11: 14)
