Re-Post”: St. Paul’s 2nd Letter to Timothy (in the hour of Gentile Apostasy, which would come).

May 31, 2016

I am always amazed how the Holy Scripture itself is simply being handled so badly by so many in the Visible and even so-called Historical Churches! But the Scripture itself forecasts such, even to the point and place of “Apostasy”! And Apostasy is simply, but yes too profoundly, the abandoning of what was once believed in/by the or a church and people! WE are seeing it in the Gentile Church most profoundly! And here are places like Europe, Great Britain included, and even America! We see it today most especially in the Western so-called Christian seminaries, it is simply unbelief, and loss in the power and authority of the Holy and Sacred Scripture itself! And make no mistake it touches almost every historical sector of the Visible Church!

Perhaps today there is no other Biblical and Apostolic Text and Epistle/Letter that is more important than St. Paul’s Letter of 2 Timothy! Indeed Paul wrote this letter while in prison in Rome itself. As Paul writes, his death is near, though perhaps not quite imminent, but the timing is uncertain. But Paul does ask Timothy to bring his books and parchments with him. Hopefully Paul will study, read and write until the end! And this he certainly did, making this Letter of 2 Timothy his last Will & Testament to the Church, and his close and dear friends and Brethren! And quite simply Christians must live on the basis of the salvation of Christ, and looking forward to Christ’s Second Coming!

And Paul, the great Gentile Apostle could thus write: “Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (2 Tim. 2: 10) And that even extends down to us Gentiles (some) as too, “some” Jews, ‘In Christ’. “But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those (them) who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” (Num. 16: 5 / John 10: 14-15 / Matt. 11: 25-27)

Finally, the Text and illustration of 2 Tim. 2: 20-21, that “Great House” of Christendom is noted, and we Christians all, are called to set ourselves apart, “a vessel for honorable use,” etc. But “with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” (Verse 22) Yes, here is our long but essential “sanctification” during this life, i.e. “To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Col. 1: 27)

Lord help and enable us who are Gentiles, and His “election of grace”, in this hour of grave apostasy all around! (Fr. R.)
