Charles Wesley Hymn… New Creation

July 30, 2016

“Finish then Thy new creation.
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see Thy great salvation.
Perfectly restored in Thee:
Changed from glory to glory.
Till in heaven we take our place.
Till we cast our crowns before Thee.
Lost in wonder, love and praise.” ~ Charles Wesley

  1. Simple yet so profound and beautiful! Such are most of Charles Wesley hymns.

  2. Colin permalink

    Having looked at earlier Methodist hymn books over the years, I have read a modest number, he wrote so many, of Charles Wesley’s offerings. Though inevitably some seem as instantly forgettable as some modern songs, many are beyond compare. My own favourite – which I have booked for my funeral – is “And Can it Be, that I should boast”

    • Colin: Aw yes, what a writer of Christian verse was Charles Wesley, he knew the art of words & good rhetoric: ‘He left his Father’s Throne above,(So free, so infinite his grace!) Empty’d Himself of All but Love, And bled for Adam’s helpless Race.’ Indeed so many good hymns he wrote! To choose one would be hard for me, but perhaps my own favorite is his:

      Father of uncreated light,
      Fountain of life and Source of power,
      We tremble at Thy glory’s height,
      And lost in silent praise adore.

      Truly Thou art a secret God,
      That hid’st Thee in the deepest shade;
      Thy inaccessible abode
      Thou hast in cloud and darkness made.

      Darkness and cloud surround Thy throne,
      And veil the brightness of Thy face;
      Still we revere a God unknown,
      A bottomless abyss of grace.

      Who, who can all Thy counsel see,
      Thine uttermost perfection prove,
      Fathom the depths of Deity,
      The mystery of redeeming love!

      Thy judgments all our thoughts transcend,
      Thy love is written on our heart,
      Thy love in part we comprehend,
      Love, only love, we know Thou art.

      And another of his lyrical drama’s I love is his: Wrestling Jacob: “Come, O Thou Traveler unknown. Whom still I hold, but cannot see.”

  3. ‘Head of Thy church triumphant, We joyfully adore Thee.’ (C.W.) – It will be great and pure joy when we see and worship our Lord & Head! The Church finally and eternally One and Together! (Rev. 5)… Fr. R.

    • I still stand “fixed” on the “Rapture” (Catching-Up)…”The coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together unto HIM.” (2 Thess. 2: 1, yes I am Post-trib) See the NET Bible Translation here… “Now regarding the arrival (and “by means of”) of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to be with him.”
