Pentecost Sunday (Sunday June 9th)

June 9, 2019

Pentecost (50th day). The name was first given to the Jewish Feast of Weeks, which fell on the 50th day after Passover, when the first-fruits of the corn harvest were presented (Deut. 16. 9) and, in most later times, the giving of the Law of Moses was commemorated. As the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles on this, the 50th day after the Resurrection (Acts 2: 1), the name was applied by the Church to the feast celebrating this event, popularly called Whitsunday, the Feast of the Decent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the 50th day after Easter, as the second festival in the Church.

Anglican Collect: O God, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by sending to them the light of the Holy Spirit : grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort. Through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God world without end.

  1. For myself, I love to see this all in the Apostle Paul’s revelation of ‘Law and Gospel’, Galatians chapter 3:10 through verse 29, with chapter 4: 1-7, and Paul’s crying “Abba Father” (verse 6)!

  2. “Then celebrate the Festival of Weeks [Chag ha-Shavuot] to the LORD your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the LORD your God has given you.” (Deuteronomy 16:10)
In a rare alignment, this year, the Christian celebration of Pentecost today on June 9 coincides with the Jewish celebration of Shavuot.
While many Christians are celebrating Pentecost as the time of the pouring out of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) on the Church, few realize that this special day originates in a Jewish holiday or why this is significant.
In Jewish communities throughout the world today, Jewish people are celebrating the Biblical holy day of Shavuot (Festival of Weeks).

Last night, people stayed up all night learning Torah. It’s a centuries old custom.

Indeed our Christianity is Judeo, i.e. Judeo-Christianity, historically & theologically! Jesus/Yeshua is forever a Jew!
